Thou Shalt Remember

· Brother Jaylon

Moses doesn’t warn Akobi about the wilderness. He warns them about the full place. Forgetting doesn’t begin with rebellion — it begins when we get full, busy and capable, and stop looking up. And He kept the covenant before we ever remembered it.

  1. 01

He warns us about the full place.

For some context, Moses is speaking to Akobi on the edge of the Promised Land. Forty years of wilderness are behind them. In the wilderness, they knew exactly where their next meal came from — they woke up and it was on the ground. Now they’re about to walk into a land with good houses, growing herds, and silver and gold multiplying, and that’s where this warning comes. Let’s take notice of that. He doesn’t warn them about the wilderness. He warns them about the full place.

But thou shalt remember uSoNINI NaNINI thy uSomandla: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Deuteronomy 8:18 KJV, as we read it
  2. 02

The thought lives in the heart.

Look closely at where that thought lives. It’s in the heart. It isn’t spoken in rebellion, and it doesn’t sound wicked. It sounds like a busy day. It sounds like work, and plans, and getting things done. It just leaves Him out. And notice what He doesn’t say. He doesn’t say wealth is evil. He doesn’t say stop building. He says remember who gives the power — and then He tells us what the power is for: that He may establish His covenant.

And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.

    Deuteronomy 8:17 KJV

The wealth was never the point. The covenant was.

  3. 03

    Forgetting comes first.

It doesn’t start with “if you rebel.” It starts with “if thou do at all forget.” Forgetting comes first. Then walking after other gods. Then serving them. Nobody plans that. It starts when we get full, busy, and capable, and stop looking up.

And it shall be, if thou do at all forget uSoNINI NaNINI thy uSomandla, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.

Deuteronomy 8:19 KJV, as we read it
  4. 04

Remembering and listening are the same posture.

Verse 20 tells us what the forgetting really is — not being obedient unto the voice of uSoNINI NaNINI. Family, remembering and listening are the same posture. To remember Him is to keep His voice in the room while we work. That’s why praying, reading, and studying aren’t extras. They’re how we keep hearing Him.

As the nations which uSoNINI NaNINI destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of uSoNINI NaNINI your uSomandla.

Deuteronomy 8:20 KJV, as we read it
  5. 05

    He keeps. We remember.

If we stop at the warning, we’ve only heard half of it. A chapter back, the Most High shows us His promises — and notice how that passage opens: “if ye hearken.” Chapter 8 ends on His voice and chapter 7 begins on it. The same thing is being asked on both sides: listen. Then look at the order. He will love thee. Then bless thee. Then multiply thee. The love comes first; the blessing is what the love does. So here’s the relationship, family. He keeps the covenant and the mercy. We remember the One who keeps it. That’s the fear we’re called to — not a fear that runs from Him, but fear in love, the kind that knows who He is: ruler, creator, and way-maker.

Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that uSoNINI NaNINI thy uSomandla shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers: And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.

Deuteronomy 7:12–13 KJV, as we read it

Closing

Family, let’s be honest before we go. Remembering Him isn’t always easy. We’re walking out of here into days that won’t ask whether we’ve prayed. Some of us have let the busyness do the talking — myself included. But He kept the covenant before we ever remembered it. He didn’t wait for Akobi to get it right, and He isn’t waiting on us to be perfect now. So if you’ve drifted, come back. Not out of guilt, but because He’s still the One who gives the power. In all your getting and doing, remember uSoNINI NaNINI.

Carry into the week

Where has the busyness done the talking this week — and what would it take to keep His voice in the room while you work?

Priestly increasings

Now unto uSoNINI NaNINI, who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us — unto Him be glory in the assembly throughout all ages, world without end.

May uSoNINI NaNINI increase you and keep you. May He make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May He lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.

And let the Assembly say, HALALELA.
